"Life Looks Up" (2009)
When you’re weighed down and smudged with stains you can’t reach to erase
When a hundred rugged pathways mark the years across your face
As a seagull veering freely sweeps the ocean with its claws
So your soul will rise up slowly, its wings rustling as it thaws
At the foot of snow-capped mountains with your courage freezing small
Your eyes straining to the heavens and your heart against the wall
When no breath fills your lungs and there’s a darkness in your head
Or a silence, or a chaos of illusions torn to shreds
In the buzz of constant aching like a horsefly on the screen
Life looks up to a horizon with fresh promises of green
It seeps into your skin and feeds the marrow of your bones
Spurring on your heavy boots to clamber up the jutting stones
In the darkness there’s a streetlight spilling hope over your skin
When doubts wrap you in their tangles and your thread is growing thin
Love opens up, a net of beating hearts to catch your falls
Sink deep with me and breathe, no longer captive of these walls
